Let it Burn - pinterest pinThere’s a certain sense of exhilaration that comes when you just take the leap and go for it; when you push it to the limit and pour everything you’ve got into making a dream a reality; when you ignite the fire within you and just let it burn. A couple of weeks ago I wrote about how much your energy gets blocked when you’ve got unfinished projects sitting on your back-burner for too long. It’s the same thing with your dreams and the big milestone goals on the way to that dream — when you start hitting those milestones it can free up all sorts of creative energy that can push you even closer.

We’ll be raising our hands Shining up to the sky ‘Cause we got the fire, fire, fire And we’re gonna let it burn… ~Ellie Goulding, “Burn”

It’s like turning the flame on a stove up to “high”. Concentrating all your energy on one specific milestone or goal will give you the focus and drive you need to actually get it done. I dedicated February to completing the first draft of my next book – I made a deliberate effort to get enough blog posts and podcasts set up for the month that I could focus on my book writing without feeling that I was neglecting the blog, and then I poured every spare minute I could find into getting the draft DONE.

I was exhausted by the time it was finished, but I was also ecstatic. This particular book is something I’ve been “working on” for almost a year, and by making a deliberate choice and a commitment to getting it done in a particular time frame… it went from a potential to an actual reality.

And that’s one of the keys to making progress towards your own dreams. Breaking it down into smaller steps and then giving yourself a firm deadline and accountability helps to ensure that you actually follow through with your plans. In my case, I had told my pre-readers that the draft would be ready for them by a particular date. In reality, I was about a week or so later than the date I had given them, but had I not given them a firm target date, then I would have been far less likely to get it done at all (let’s face it – you can always a good reason for putting something off if there’s no deadline!)

If you’ve got a big dream, it’s like a spark within you… and it’s high time you let it blaze forth into a beautiful flame! When you give yourself permission to focus on it and get things done, you’re unleashing a whole awful lot of power and building something that wasn’t there before. There’s magic in that ability, and not everyone will get to experience it because not everyone is prepared to do the work of creating something new.

Stack the odds in your favour – pick a milestone, give yourself a deadline, and tell someone that you will give them the finished product by a certain date. And then go out there and do it. Let yourself shine, right up to the sky. Let it burn, baby!
