If you’ve got a big dream that’s close to your heart the best thing that you can do to make it a reality for yourself is to first get clear about what it is that you really want, and then start working backwards from that end goal to figure out your sub-goals and smaller milestones.
Working backwards to achieve your goals starts with a very clear understanding of what that big dream really is. For example, if you want to be a famous actor, do you want to be famous for theatre, film or television? And what, exactly, does “famous” mean to you? Is it when you’re accepting your first Tony or Oscar award, or when you’re interviewed on all the big talk shows, or when you are regularly getting paid eight figures per project? Get very specific about what it is that you want, in a way that you will be able to measure.
The next step is to look at that very specific end goal and figure out what’s going to have to happen to get you there. So, for our person with the dream of becoming a famous actor, there’s obviously going to have to be some acting involved. So, depending on where you’re starting from, you could start auditioning for local theatre groups in your city, signing up with local or national casting agencies to get yourself added to their databases, enrolling yourself in acting classes or drama school. You’re also going to have to get some headshots done and spruce up your acting résumé. And at some point you’ll have to find yourself an agent, and probably a business manager to help you keep track of all those millions you’re going to be raking in. 😉
The point of working backwards is that you start to build up a big picture of what needs to happen on your journey in order to get to where you want to be. You’ll have a clear idea of what you need to know and do, and what actions are going to be critical to getting you there. Yes, you’ll still need to be flexible enough to grab those serendipitous opportunities when they spring up, but in the meantime, and in between, you’ll know you have a direct map from where you are to where you’re going and a means of keeping yourself focused, on track and motivated to get there.
